International Korean Adoptee Associations

Gathering Family Program 2016

This year’s Gathering will see a large number of adoptees bringing their own families to Korea. As the adoptees’ children range in age from 4 months to adult, the Gathering programming will offer family friendly activities and events throughout the week. In addition, the Gathering Family Program aims to encourage and strengthen networking among families, the children of adoptees and Korean birth families.

Aside from the SOLD OUT Caribbean Bay Trip, sign up is only necessary for the Family Meet & Greet (Tuesday, August 2nd) and the Day Trip to Seoul Children’s Grand Park (Wednesday, August 3rd), both activities intended for adult adoptee families with children. A link to sign up for both is provided below in the activity information (1 sign up form for both activities).

Friday & Saturday August 5-6

Friday & Saturday August 5-6

IKAA encourages families to take advantage of this free time to connect with other families to explore family-friendly locations in Seoul.

Sign-up sheets will be available during registration for families who want to coordinate together to visit the following locations:

1) Kyobo Bookstore. This large bookstore sells much more than just books and is within walking distance of the Lotte Hotel.

2) Cheonggyecheon Stream and Plaza. Take a break from the cityscape and enjoy some natural beauty within the heart of Seoul. Exploring this stream is a very popular activity among Koreans of all ages.

3) CoEx Aquarium and SM Town (K-Pop Museum).

4) Insadong. This is a must-visit area for anyone shopping for traditional Korean gifts, arts, and crafts. You can try some traditional Korean tea at one of the tea rooms, and watch the street vendors making the thousands of strands of “King’s Dessert.”

5) Glasses Shopping. Compared to most Western countries, buying glasses in Korea is inexpensive and fast. Eye exams are done on site, or glasses can usually be made from your existing prescription (from a written prescription or from current glasses). Glasses are usually available for pickup within a day or two. This is a great way to have a truly Korean experience with your family, and leave with something functional!

6) Hanbok Shopping. Hanbok are the traditional Korean clothes that are still worn today by Koreans on special occasions. Browse the many colors and styles for all ages.

7) Namsan Tower. Enjoy a panoramic view of Seoul from a very popular location for Koreans and tourists alike.
