Shopping Near the Lotte Hotel

In addition to the many historical and cultural opportunities Korea has long offered, modern day Korea boasts an amazing array of fun and inexpensive ways to spend your free time (and money). Fortunately, many of these things are easily found in Myeongdong, just a short 5-10 minute walk from the Lotte Hotel, or Namdaemun, approximately a 7-10 minute taxi ride (15-20 minute walk) from the Lotte!

This is in no way a comprehensive listing, but for your convenience, we’ve collected a few of our favorite things to buy — and even got G16 participants a discount for one!

If you have anything to add to the list, please mention it in the Facebook Group for IKAA G16 Registered Participants, and we’ll try our best to add it (time allowing, of course)!

Compared to most Western countries, buying glasses in Korea is inexpensive and fast. Eye exams are done on site, or glasses can usually be made from your existing prescription (from a written prescription or from current glasses). Glasses are usually available for pickup within a day or two. This is a great way to have a truly Korean experience, and leave with something (or multiple things) functional!

We have even built a relationship with one glasses shop, Mino Glasses — just mention you’re an IKAA G16 attendee or show your G16 ID Badge and you’ll get a discount! And yes…Mr. Min Ho Han is Superman…^_^

NOTE: We’re also trying to arrange for a volunteer to take a group to Mino Glasses on one of the days, so if you’re interested, please follow up when you check-in and get your conference materials!

Cute Socks

Cute Socks

Korean socks are seriously cute, aren’t they? And they’re inexpensive — only KRW 1,000 – 2,000 (approximately USD $0.88 – $1.75) a pair.

They’re typically sold on street carts and you can easily find them in Myeongdong (and all over Seoul…). If you buy a lot (10+ pairs), we’d also suggest asking for a discount. There’s no guarantee it will work, but hey, can’t hurt!

And even if cute socks aren’t exactly your thing, they make a great (and inexpensive) gift!

Korean Beauty & Make Up Products

Korean Beauty & Make Up Products

Korean products have exploded in the global beauty and makeup scene, so why not take advantage of being in the place where it all began?

Also a short walk into Myeongdong will bring you into “beauty and makeup store central.”

There is a HUGE range of products (and prices), but you will be sure to find things that best suit your preferences. Want more information about the Korean beauty and makeup world? A quick Google search for “Korean beauty,” “K-beauty,” or “Korean makeup” and take your pick of the many, many articles that pop up.
